Deputies: South Carolina man granted bail escapes from jail
EFFINGHAM, S.C. (AP) — A man who had just been granted bail wrestled free from a guard and ran out a malfunctioning door at the Florence County jail for just 90 minutes of freedom, authorities said.
Bryce Wayne Altman, 21, now faces an escape charge that could add up to an additional 10 years in prison, Florence County deputies said.
Altman was arrested Friday on charges of breach of trust, malicious injury to property, second-degree burglary and financial card fraud. A magistrate granted his bond Sunday.
But before his release could be processed, Altman ran from the booking area of the jail through a door that did not fully close like it was supposed to, deputies said.
Deputies, police tracking dogs, state troopers and wildlife agents surrounded the jail in Effingham. Nearby residents called 911 after seeing the prisoner, and Altman was arrested 90 minutes later about 1 1/2 miles (2.4 kilometers) from the jail, authorities said.
Jail records did not list a lawyer for Altman.
