East Troy builds early lead, defeats Jefferson 28-12

October 7, 2018 GMT

JEFFERSON — Senior quarterback Jake Dessart ran for a score and threw for a score to lead East Troy to a 28-12 Rock Valley Conference win over Jefferson’s football team on Friday.

Dessart rushed 37 times for 178 yards and a touchdown. His only completion of the game was a 27-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Price to give East Troy (6-2 overall and in conference) a 7-0 lead with 1 minute, 13 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Trojans went up 14-0 on Dessart’s 3-yard TD run with 11:19 left in the half.

Jefferson (5-3) closed within two points on junior Connor Salerno’s 87-yard kickoff return following Dessart’s rushing score, and senior Ryan Brost’s 15-yard scoring pass to senior Ben Sukow with 5:40 left in the half.

A pair of missed extra points left the Eagles trailing 14-12.

They got the ball back quickly after the second score, but junior defensive back Zack Burke’s 41-yard interception return with 3:10 left in the half made it a nine-point game.

Senior running back Dylan Jakscht’s 1-yard TD run with 31 seconds left before halftime made it 28-12, and that’s how things ended after a scoreless second half.

“That pick six is pretty deflating,” Jefferson football coach Steve Gee said. “As a coach, now you’re battling not just the scheme, but the emotions. It’s tough to come back from.”

Gee praised his defense for holding the Trojans off the scoreboard in the second half.

“I was pleased about that,” Gee said. “We made a couple adjustments at halftime and (our defense) responded really well and held them scoreless.

“East Troy comes to the line, looks for a weakness in a gap, takes the quarterback and attacks it. Our guys came off the field talking about it. (The communication is great to see) later in the year.

“As the defensive coordinator, I’m happy (with our defensive recognition). When a kid runs that hard, you’ve got to get low. That gave us a chance to get us back in game, but we just couldn’t do it.”

Brost completed 8-of-15 passes for 96 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed 13 times for 44 yards. Sukow caught three passes for 51 yards.

Senior running back Nolan Klawitter returned from injury. Though he managed just 12 yards rushing on eight attempts to go with a 17-yard reception, it was an encouraging sign to see the team’s leading rusher back on the field.

“We did get Nolan back, which was good,” Gee said. “Conditions were not good for the way he runs. He had a couple decent carries. As the game went on, the field got sloppier and sloppier. We got behind and were forced to throw more. But he was excited to get back in. It’s a good building blocking heading into next week and into the playoffs.”

Jefferson closes out the conference slate at Whitewater in the regular season finale next Friday.
