Stephanie Marie Sorensen, 91, of Gilman and formerly of Kankakee, passed away Thursday (Jan. 24, 2019) at her home, surrounded by her family.
Stephanie was born Dec. 3, 1927, in Kankakee, the daughter of Jim “The Barber” and Lena Digregorio. She married Chris Sorensen in February 1944 at St. Rose Catholic Church in Kankakee. Stephanie was a surgical technician and was employed by Riverside Hospital for 23 years. She also owned and operated Christi’s Café in Kankakee and later St. George. She was a talented artist who enjoyed oil painting, crocheting, cooking, baking and cake decorating; she also enjoyed flowers, fishing, music and ballroom dancing. She loved life and especially loved spending time with her pets, family and friends.
Stephanie is survived by her loving daughter, Mary Ann (Jim) Fate, of Gilman; her sister, Rose Mary Alberts, of Clifton; and one brother, Jim (Ann) Digregorio, of Maricopa, Az.; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Stephanie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Ronald Lee and Donald Franklin; and her siblings, Antoinette (Toni) Normandin, Carmella Arseneau, Josephine Leggott and Benny Fiore. She also was preceded in death by her special friend and companion for 38 years, Vernon Gall.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Knapp Funeral Home in Clifton, where the family will receive guests from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1. A funeral Mass celebrated by The Rev. Marek Herbut will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilman. Burial will follow at Clifton Cemetery.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Kankakee Valley, especially her nurse, Roxanne Wilson, for the excellent care Stephanie received.
