Monument at Confederate Cemetery in SC vandalized
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) — Police in South Carolina are investigating after a monument at the Confederate Cemetery in Mount Pleasant’s Old Village was covered in spray paint.
The graffiti included a swastika, an X, “sic semper” and “USA,” The Post and Courier reported. The Latin phrase sic semper tyrannis, coined by Shakespeare in “Julius Caesar,” translates as “thus always to tyrants.”
Part of the monument was initially tagged Monday, said Jeff Antley, who maintains the cemetery. More paint was added sometime Thursday, he said.
Further details about the incident have not been released.
