Old school gym to become community center in Huntsville
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — The city of Huntsville plans to spend more than $5 million to transform an old high school gymnasium into a community center.
Construction on the Johnson Legacy Complex is set to begin next month. It will be located at the site of the old Johnson High School in Huntsville.
The new project will include volleyball courts, a rock-climbing wall, exercise facilities and community meeting rooms. The remainder of the school will be demolished later.
Council President Devyn Keith says the center will become Huntsville’s premier indoor facility.
The plan is only the latest example of Huntsville reusing old school buildings for community projects. Two breweries and an event venue are located at an old middle school campus developed by a private business near downtown.
