Lynn R. Iverson -- Nelson, Wis.
Lynn R. Iverson, age 82, of Nelson, Wis., a longtime teacher at Alma, Wis., schools, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019, at Mayo Clinic Hospital — Saint Marys Campus in Rochester. He was born June 17, 1936, in Rock Dell, the son of Haven and Frances (Yankowiak) Iverson. He graduated from Kellogg High School in 1954. He then attended Winona State University graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1962. He received his master’s in Education from Winona State in 1974. Lynn taught for 33 years for the Alma Area Schools System, teaching geography, health and physical education classes.
He also coached football and track for many years at AHS. Lynn’s most powerful and successful football teams were witnessed during the 1960s and 1970s. In the fall of 1970, the Rivermen completed another undefeated, 8-0 season and allowed only six total points. Those six points came in a 36-6 victory versus Winona Cotter High School. As a successful track and field coach, Lynn sent several athletes to Madison to participate in the Wisconsin Track and Field meet, including his sons, Kirk and Steve, who qualified in the pole vault and long jump.
Lynn met the love of his life, Marguerite Tiffany, at a dance at the Oak Center General Store in rural Lake City. They later married on Jan. 20, 1956, at the United Methodist Church in Durand. They continued their shared joy of dancing throughout their married lives.
Lynn’s interests and hobbies also included deer, duck and pheasant hunting. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He dearly loved spending time on their farm located in rural Nelson raising pigs and chickens, cutting wood and gazing out over the expanse of the farm. His greatest joy was spending time with his beloved wife and family. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Wabasha and the Nelson Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Iverson, Nelson, Wis.; children, Deborah Iverson, Madisonville, Ky., Kimberly (Arthur) Litchfield, Goodyear, Ariz., Kirk Iverson, Hudson, Wis., Steven Iverson, Hugo, and Heidi Iverson (Mark Jones), Kellogg; 10 grandchildren, Matthew Gorell, Tiffany Griesbach, Nathaniel and Isaac Gorell, Arthur Litchfield III and Joshua Litchfield, Nicholas Iverson, and Mariah, Hannah and Isabella Iverson-Jones; 18 great-grandchildren; sisters, Kay (Ken) Barjenbruch, Omaha, Neb., and Margaret ‘Mitzi’ (Joe) Dohn, Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.; brother, Dennis (Pat) Iverson, Owatonna; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Connie O’Connor.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Faith Lutheran Church in Wabasha with the Rev. David Knox officiating. Interment will be at Nelson Cemetery. Honorary bearers are his 10 grandchildren. Family and friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at Abbott Funeral Home in Wabasha and one hour before the service Tuesday at the church.
