Charges Dropped Against Man Arrested for Eating Grapes
MIAMI (AP) _ The state has dropped theft charges against a man arrested after a security guard saw him eating grapes in a supermarket.
Arthur Culberth, 55, of Miami said he planned to pay at the checkout counter. Store officials said he was stealing.
Culberth spent a night in jail for eating part of a $1.65 package of white seedless grapes. He also got a notice to appear in Dade County Court.
But when Culberth showed up last month to enter a plea of innocent, he learned that prosecutor Sergio Acosta had decided to drop the charges of petty theft and resisting arrest without violence.
Acosta said Monday that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute.
