FARMINGTON, Maine (AP) — A home economics teacher who died in May has left behind $700,000 for her alma mater.

The donation from T. Margaret Brown of Westbrook is the second-largest gift in history of the University of Maine at Farmington. Her will stipulates that the money go to the UMF Endowed Scholarship Fund and to establish another scholarship fund in her name.

Joanne Edwards, executor of her estate, tells the Morning Sentinel that her friend lived frugally and was smart with her money. Brown never married and had no children of her own.

Brown, a 1955 graduate of UMF, spent her career as a home economics teacher at Portland High School and King Middle School in Portland. She also held a graduate degree from the University of Maine.
