HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) _ Mike Masella picked off two passes and recovered a fumble that led to a score Saturday as James Madison beat Massachusetts 13-10.

Greg Maddox hit Earnest Payton with a 35-yard scoring pass just before the half to break a 7-7 tie, and the Dukes (2-1, 1-0 Atlantic 10) never gave up the lead.

UMass (0-3, 0-3) cut the lead to 13-10 on a 24-yard field goal by Andy Maclay with 2:23 left in the third quarter.

Masella’s fumble recovery set up a 14-yard TD run by Anthony Moore in the first quarter. Though the Minutemen outgained James Madison 268 yards to 203 yards, they turned the ball over four times.

James Madison’s Nelson Garner missed field-goal attempts of 34 and 37 yards in gusty wind and showers.

Maddox completed 11 of 26 passes for 113 yards and one touchdown, with Payton catching three passes for 74 yards.

Marcel Shipp led the Minutemen with 97 yards on 16 carries, and Jim Pizano had 44 yards a one TD, 4-yard run in the second quarter, on 10 carries.

The Dukes limited quarterback Jeff Smith to 9 of 26 for 71 yards and three interceptions.

Both teams were plagued by penalties: James Madison seven for 61 yards and the Minutemen nine for 72 yards.
