‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ Turns 75
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ The warm-up song of the Harlem Globetrotters and a hit for the likes of Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman and Ethel Waters turned 75 this week.
The Library of Congress said ``Sweet Georgia Brown,″ composed by Maceo Pickard and Kenneth Casey, stands as the 13th most-recorded music standard.
Globetrotters’ owner Mannie Jackson, marking the song’s 75th anniversary, said, ``For us, it’s like a good-luck charm.″
Not even standards like ``Jingle Bells,″ ``Ol’ Man River″ and ``The Battle Hymn of the Republic″ have been recorded more often, Library of Congress records show.
