SEVILLE, Spain (AP) _ Maxim Tarasov of Russia succeeded the great Sergei Bubka as pole vault world champion today, vaulting 19 feet, 9 inches to defeat Dmitriy Markov of Australia. Aleksandr Averbukh of Israel took the bronze.

Sergei Bubka of Ukraine, who had won all six previous world titles, did not compete because of injury.

Markov took silver with 19-4 1/4 and Averbukh jumped 19-0 1/2 on his second attempt to take third place.

Olympic champion Jean Galfione of France crashed out of the competition at the starting height of 18-8 1/2. He won the indoor world title in March.
