Student Killed At Chicago High School

October 15, 1987

CHICAGO (AP) _ A 15-year-old high school student was fatally shot in the chest between classes Wednesday in what authorities believe was an act of gang violence.

Another student, 16-year-old Larry Sims, was arrested in connection with the shooting of Dartagnan Young at DuSable High School, police said. Sims, described as a gang member, will face murder charges and will be charged as an adult rather than a juvenile, said Detective Thomas Kelly.

Young was shot about 8 a.m. in a third-floor hallway after arguing with several other students over street-gang activity, police and school officials said.

Sims was arrested about one block away a short time after the shooting, said Lisa Howard, spokeswoman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office. A bond hearing was scheduled for Thursday, she said.

Young ran from the third floor after being shot, school board spokesman Bob Saigh said.

″He was bleeding profusely. He was stopped by school officials and taken to the school’s medical clinic,″ Saigh said.

″There was a class change at that time so students were moving through the building,″ he added. ″Initially, there was panic and confusion.″

Young was rushed by ambulance to the University of Chicago’s Bernard Mitchell Hospital, where he died in the emergency room at 9:13 a.m., hospital spokesman John Easton said.

After the shooting, Chicago police officers took about 40 DuSable students to South Side police headquarters for questioning, Detective Kate Brannigan said.

Investigators have not determined whether Young was a member of a street gang, she said.

After the shooting, Saigh said, students were kept in their classrooms for about 1 1/2 hours while police investigated at the scene. The school, which has about 2,000 students, then returned to a normal schedule.
