Prep Swimming: Roseburg advances six to Class 6A state meet at district

February 11, 2018 GMT

The Roseburg boys freestyle relay teams won gold at Saturday’s Southwest Conference district meet at Willamalane Park Swim Center in Springfield.

Roseburg’s 200 free relay won in 1:29.21, more than three seconds ahead of Grants Pass (1:32.88). The win will advance Roseburg swimmers Robert Gosman, Jaime Brown, Hunter Agsten and Tanner Todd to the OSAA Class 6A Championships on Friday and Saturday at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.

“No records were broken yet, but we’re inching down on them,” Roseburg coach Christy Todd said. “I think we could A-final and medal in both relays at state. They’re going in so strong.”

Brighid Rickman and Zachary Traul will also head to state for the Indians.

Traul, Agsten, Gosman and Tanner Todd were part of the 400 relay team that won the district title in 3:18.92.

Roseburg came in as the No. 2 seed, behind South Eugene. The Axemen finished second in 3:20.69.

“We knocked their socks off,” Christy Todd said. “We really beat them.”

Gosman also advanced in the 50 free and 100 free.

He finished second in the 50 free behind North Medford’s Daniel Olson, but his time (21.90) was below the automatic qualifying standard (22.36).

Gosman’s 47.94 in the 100 free also automatically qualified him for state. He finished second behind South Eugene’s Anzo DeGiulio (46.88).

Tanner Todd and Hunter Agsten could get in on wild-card selections, although coach Todd said it was unlikely. Todd finished the 50 free in 22.55 and Agsten finished the 500 free in 5:03.10.

The wild-card picks will be announced Sunday.

Rickman will represent Roseburg in the 50 free. She finished second at the district meet in 25.02 behind South Eugene’s Sophia Carrai (24.64).

“She got the auto time on the dot,” coach Todd said.

Rickman also finished second in the 100 free (55.30) behind Carrai (53.15). She fell short of the auto time, but will likely get the wild-card.

“It was a fabulous day,” Christy Todd said. “I couldn’t have been happier. It was exciting and a good finish to the season. We had PRs left and right and that’s always our goal.”

Roseburg had 10 swimmers earn medals at district. The boys team finished third and the girls finished fourth.

“We had kids for the first time earn medals, which was exciting,” Christy Todd said. “We were a lot closer to finishing second than most people expected, closer than I expected.”
