Calvin Koehler, 70, Horicon

Calvin R. Koehler, 70, Horicon, passed away Monday, April 16, 2018, at Dycora Transitional Health in Beaver Dam after a courageous battle with leukemia.

A celebration of Calvin’s life will take place Saturday, April 21, at 2 p.m. at Koepsell Murray Funeral Home in Horicon with the Rev. Ray Field officiating. A visitation will be held on Saturday from 1-2 p.m. Burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery in Horicon followed by a reception at the Ice Cream Station in Horicon.

Calvin was born July 25, 1947, in Beaver Dam to Ralph and Paula (Kiesow) Koehler. He attended Horicon grade school and graduated from Horicon High School in 1965. He earned his BS in biology from UW-Oshkosh in 1969. He served his country in the U.S. Army from October 1969 to May 1972 as a hospital lab technician. He then went on to earn his master’s degree in zoology (physiology) from Iowa State University in 1975.

Calvin had several jobs in the area, including UW-Madison Department of Pathology, Mayville Post Office, Waldvogel’s Farm Market, Dodge County Historical Society, Citizen Publishing Company and Vineyard Books and Gifts. Calvin was a devoted lifetime member of Emmanuel United Brethren, now Methodist Church in Horicon, where he served faithfully in many capacities such as treasurer, usher and financial secretary, and enjoyed maintaining the shrubs and taking care of the outdoor signage at the church. In his spare time, Calvin greatly enjoyed spending time on his boat on the Horicon Marsh and Lake Sinissippi. He was also an avid birdwatcher and loved going on extensive road trips covering all states west of the Mississippi. He also collected coins. Most important to Calvin was his faith, in which he led by example in his life.

He is survived by special friend, Patricia Davis; his second cousin, Steve Schielke; other relatives and friends.

Calvin was preceded in death by his parents; aunts and uncle, Fred (Alexa) Koehler and Dorothy Koehler; and his beloved cat, Checkers.
