Massive South Side tire dump to be cleared
An old tire dump that’s posed a health and fire hazard on the South Side for well over a decade may finally be cleared after it was purchased by new owners.
Copart, a global online vehicle auction company with corporate offices in Dallas, announced its purchase of the former Safe Tire Disposal Corp. facility at 11150 Applewhite Road, and plans to remove about 1.2 million tires that pose a fire hazard and serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes that can spread the Zika virus and other diseases.
Copart, which operates a neighboring property at 11130 Applewhite Road, will use the dump site’s 36 acres to expand its vehicle storage and auction business.
A compliance agreement with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality requires Copart, working with Liberty Tire Recycling LLC of Pittsburgh, to remove all the tires and tire pieces within 300 days.
Kaci Schack, Copart’s senior marketing manager, said the company hopes “to complete the task much sooner” than the required 300 days.
“We are already beginning that process,” Schack said in an e-mail.
The TCEQ in 2016 listed the site as one of the five largest tire dumps in the state, of more than 100 that are known to exist.
