NACS breaks ground on new elementary school
Northwest Allen County Schools today celebrated the groundbreaking of its eighth elementary building with a shovels-in-dirt ceremony followed by the unconventional approach of moving earth with a dozer operated by Superintendent Chris Himsel.
“That part was fun,” said Himsel, who grew up on a farm and operated heavy machinery for previous jobs.
About two dozen people gathered for the brief event along the two-lane Hathaway Road.
An elementary school is expected to open on the site, a former soybean field, in fall 2020.
Voters approved the project in May as part of a nearly $34 million referendum.
“It’s fantastic to get it started,” Himsel said.
