Help4Kids Florence, Billy Powers receive Marion Medallion awards
FLORENCE, S.C. – In recognition of their service to citizens in the Pee Dee region, Billy Powers and Help 4 Kids Florence were honored Tuesday afternoon with Marion Medallion awards.
The ceremony took place at the Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center, and the awards are presented by the university and the Morning News.
Fred Carter, president of Francis Marion University, said that often, the selfless acts of Marion Medallion recipients are only known by the giver and the recipient.
“This is the one award in the Pee Dee for extraordinary, outstanding service that you can’t be nominated for, you can’t be voted into it,” Carter said. “It’s not a popularity selection. You get here by the acts that you do of generosity and charity and service for your fellow citizens.”
Powers is the CEO of Powers Properties and Construction. Powers has served on numerous boards. When it comes to serving and giving funds to individuals and causes, Powers is known to do so quietly and behind-the-scenes, Carter said.
Help 4 Kids Florence is a nonprofit organization that fights childhood hunger on the weekends. Every week, volunteers pack more than 2,000 bags filled with self-serving foods for children across the Pee Dee to eat on their days away from school. Don Kausler Jr., editor of the Morning News, said the organization consists of dedicated volunteers who fill a need in the community.
