Holiday Gift Idea: A&W Launches Centennial Book to Benefit Disabled Vets

November 21, 2018

LEXINGTON, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov 21, 2018--Just in time for Cyber Monday and holiday gift giving, A&W Restaurants continues its long tradition of supporting America’s veterans with a new book commemorating its approaching centennial.

Entitled “100 Years of A&W Restaurants,” the 150-page, coffee table book is a compilation of memories and photos submitted by the brand’s fans and former employees, as well as dozens of historical images. The book is now on sale at www.awmerchandise.com for $24.95. All profits will be donated to Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

A&W, America’s first restaurant chain, celebrates its centennial next year. The first frosty mug of legendary root beer was served from a roadside stand in Lodi, California, at a parade welcoming home World War I veterans. Today, there are nearly 1,000 restaurants worldwide. “A&W holds a special place in so many Americans’ hearts,” said president and CEO Kevin Bazner. “This book is a way for our fans to help commemorate and record our history.”

A&W loyalists submitted hundreds of memories, photos and stories, including recollections of first jobs, first dates and many happily-ever-afters. In addition, the book also contains historic images of early restaurants, a tribute to the Original Bacon Cheeseburger creator Dale Mulder and the evolution of Rooty the Great Root Bear mascot.

“A&W has a long, deep relationship with America’s veterans, going back to that parade in 1919. This is why we are donating all profits from the book’s sale to DAV,” Bazner added. He noted that many A&W restaurants were opened by returning World War II veterans. A&W’s popular annual National Root Beer Float Day promotion has raised $800,000 for veterans groups since being launched in 2011.

Along with the centennial book, A&W has produced a line of special edition centennial mementos, featuring mugs – including ones embossed with real gold – that will be sold at select U.S. restaurant locations. Other items sold online include growlers and clothing.

America’s first restaurant chain, A&W still makes Root Beer fresh in each restaurant from real cane sugar, water and a proprietary blend of herbs, bark, spices and berries that are served in a frosty mug alongside burgers, fries, chicken tenders and other All American Food® favorites.
