Libyan cleric, ex-police officer killed in east
TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — A security official in Libya says separate attacks have killed a Muslim cleric and a former police officer in the eastern city of Benghazi.
The official says cleric Farag Muftah al-Fitouri, a former military officer and a follower of Sufi mystical Muslim order, was killed Thursday morning in a car bombing. The official says gunmen later killed Lt. Col. Omar al-Arifi, a former police officer.
The official offered no motive for the attacks. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to journalists.
The deaths come as part of a campaign of targeted killings in the city since the ouster of dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011. Authorities have blamed the killings on Islamists seeking revenge over a heavy security crackdown in the 1990s and militias.
