“The two featured college students are among the dozens of scholars supported by Corvias Foundation each year,” said John Picerne, Corvias Foundation founder and CEO of Corvias, a company that partners with the military, municipalities, colleges and universities. “Because military-connected students face unique challenges, Corvias Foundation provides support that goes beyond the dollar to equip our scholars with tools such as mentorships, conference opportunities and career services to nurture their professional development.”

Lahela Daniels is pursuing a degree in sociology and legal studies at the University of Oregon, while Samantha Kearney is studying public health and sociology at The Ohio State University with the ambition of becoming a Registered Dietician. Lahela’s feature can be found here, while Samantha’s feature can be found here. Both Daniels and Kearney are children of active-duty service members who were stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C. at the time of the awarded scholarships.

“Lahela and Samantha’s stories both eloquently exemplify how the higher education process is impacted by the military family experience,” said Maria Montalvo, Corvias Foundation executive director. “These narratives portray how the unique challenges faced by military-connected students can lead to incredible strength and resiliency. Through our partnership with First Lady Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher Initiative and Forbes Media, Lahela and Samantha can share their inspiring stories with a greater audience and encourage others to reach higher.”

“I’m thankful for my scholarship family at Corvias Foundation for providing me a sense of security in knowing that there are other students like me, who are the first in their military family wanting to reach higher for an education,” said Daniels.

This partnership grew out of Corvias Foundation’s military-connected scholar programs, including the #PurpleIs social media campaign that took place earlier this year, which recognized the resiliency of military-dependent children. The color purple represents the colors of the all five military branches combined. Since 2006, Corvias Foundation has awarded nearly $14 million, or more than 450 scholarships, to children of active-duty service members and military spouses.
