Municipalities given grants to improve commercial districts
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Nine municipalities have been awarded grants to improve their commercial districts.
Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo and the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation announced the winners on Friday.
Barrington, East Providence, New Shoreham, North Providence, Pawtucket, Providence, Warren, Westerly and Woonsocket are receiving funding from the Main Street Improvement Fund.
Projects can get up to $300,000.
Pawtucket received $300,000 to enhance access to the Dexter Street’s commercial corridor, improving the city’s link to Broad Street and the forthcoming Pawtucket train station. Raimondo promised to help Pawtucket after the Pawtucket Red Sox announced the team is moving to Worcester, Massachusetts.
Westerly received one of the larger awards. It’s getting $233,000 to upgrade the building facade for the Ocean Community United Theatre, to help create a regional center for the arts and arts education.
