Reagan Appoints Rear Adm. Irwin Coast Guard Vice Commandant

WASHINGTON (AP) _ President Reagan has nominated Rear Adm. James C. Irwin as vice commandant of the Coast Guard, Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Hanford Dole said Monday.

Irwin, commander of the 5th Coast Guard District, headquartered in Portsmouth, Va., would replace Vice Adm. Benedict Stabile, who is retiring.

The nomination is subject to Senate confirmation and would carry with it a promotion to three-star rank.

The Coast Guard’s commandant, Adm. James S. Gracey, also is retiring. Mrs. Dole announced earlier he will be replaced by Vice Adm. Paul A. Yost Jr., the Atlantic area commander.
