April 5, 2017 GMT

Multiple people were injured and a Kittitas man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in two vehicle crashes Tuesday on Interstate 82 southbound near Ellensburg.

The first crash occurred Tuesday morning at 11:36 a.m. at milepost 3, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Zhi Fa Chen, 33, of Ellensburg was driving a grey 2016 Honda van south toward Yakima in the left lane and Patrick Zink, 64, of Kittitas was driving in front of her in a 1997 green Nissan Quest, according to the WSP. Chen attempted to pass Zink, but when he moved back into the left lane struck Zink, sending them both into the median.

Chen rolled his vehicle in the median and came to a rest on the van’s wheels. Zink crossed the median and entered the northbound lanes where he was struck by Pamela Anderson’s 2016 Peterbuilt semi and trailer.

Zink was severely injured in the crash, Washington State Trooper John Bryant said. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. Chen was injured, but refused aid. Anderson was not injured.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation and no charges have been pressed at this time, according to the WSP.

Second crash

The second crash involving an illegal U-turn occurred Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 82 at milepost 2, injuring two Ellensburg women.

Joyce McPherson, 74, of Lakewood was driving a 2008 grey Honda Accord at 6:39 p.m. in the left lane, when she started to slow down to make a U-turn, according to the WSP.

Vincente Gurrero Chavez, 32, of Ellensburg was behind McPherson and couldn’t slow down in time, striking the rear of McPherson’s vehicle, according to the WSP. Vincente then veered right and struck a semi in the right lane driven by Daniel Mackner, 49, of Ellensburg.

Sydney Applonie, 20, of Spokane Valley and a 5-month-old girl were both passengers in McPherson’s vehicle. No one was injured in McPherson’s vehicle.

Gurrero Chavez’s vehicle had several passengers — Maria Gurrero, 43, of Ellensburg, a 6-year-old boy, a 10-month-old girl and a 7-year-old girl, according to the WSP. Maria Gurrero and the 7-year-old were injured; Maria Gurrero was transported to KVH.

Mackner was not injured in the crash.

The cause of the crash was an illegal U-turn by McPherson and charges are pending, according to the WSP.

I-82 southbound was closed for about four hours Tuesday afternoon.
