Wheeler, Paynter lead Boyd County to 16th Region title
MOREHEAD, Ky. — Savannah Wheeler scored 24 points and Harley Paynter 21 to lead Boyd County a 63-47 victory over Russell in the Kentucky 16th Region girls basketball championship game Monday at Morehead State University’s Ellis T. Johnson Arena.
The Lions (27-4) advance to the state tournament and will play Region 7 champion Louisville Male (21-7) at 1:30 p.m. March 14 at Rupp Arena in Lexington.
Boyd County jumped to a 14-9 lead but couldn’t shake the Red Devils (27-5) and led 31-26 at halftime. The Lions, though, outscored Russell 22-12 in the third quarter to pull away.
Paynter grabbed 12 rebounds.
Lakie Sanders scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Russell in her final high school game. Kaeli Ross scored 12 and Shaelyn Steele 10.

COAL GROVE 81, LEESBURG FAIRFIELD 46: The Hornets (17-6) made 14 of 22 shots from 3-point range in a rout of the Lions (12-11) in a Division IV District semifinal game at Ohio University’s Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio.
Coal Grove moves on to the finals against Waterford at 8:15 p.m. Thursday.
Cory Borders scored 20, Aaron Musick 13 and Evan Holmes 12 for the Hornets. Sam Buddlemeyer led Fairfield with 12 points.
ASHLAND 59, BOYD COUNTY 43: The Tomcats (17-16) won the 16th Region Tournament championship and advanced to the state tournament for the first time since 2002 by beating the Lions (24-11) at Morehead State University’s Ellis T. Johnson Arena.
Cole Villers led Ashland with 21 points. Tournament most valuable player Devaunte Robinson scored 13 and snatched nine rebounds. Ethan Hudson scored 11.
Boyd County was paced by Blake Stewart with 14 points. Carson Webb chipped in 10.
