Potential Witness Says He Saw Simpson Arranging Bag at Airport
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ A man told authorities he saw O.J. Simpson casually rummaging in a bag by an airport garbage can the night Simpson’s ex-wife and a friend were murdered, ABC News reported Friday.
The prospective witness, Skip Junis, refused to comment Friday, but ABC got hold of a copy of the statement he gave police Wednesday.
Junis said he was parked outside the American Airlines terminal at Los Angeles International Airport when he saw Simpson ``standing by a garbage can near the luggage check-in podium.″ Junis told police that Simpson’s right arm was ``near the opening of the container,″ ABC reported.
Simpson was ``arranging something inside a half-moon shaped black bag on top of the container which he zipped closed,″ the statement said. ``He appeared preoccupied and not in a rush.″
The police report does not indicate whether Junis saw Simpson put anything into the container, ABC reported.
The prosecution believes the bag contained bloody clothes that Simpson wore while he allegedly killed Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman on June 12.
On Thursday, Deputy District Attorney Marcia Clark said a witness, whom she did not identify, had come forward and described seeing Simpson at the trash can. She also said that the can would be introduced as evidence.
But Suzanne Childs, a spokeswoman for the District Attorney’s office, said Friday that Clark was a joking about bringing it into court.
Airport skycap James Williams testified Wednesday that Simpson stood near the trash can as he was checking his luggage, but that he didn’t see Simpson do anything involving the can.
Williams said Simpson checked two bags and carried a third over his shoulder.
Limousine driver Allan Park said he helped load four bags and thought Simpson added a fifth before leaving for the airport. At the airport, he helped unload four pieces of luggage, Park said.
