VSP: Man arrested after firing multiple shots in Saxtons River
SAXTONS RIVER, Vt. -
It was an early morning that mother of two, Terri Derby, never expected. “I had just woken up to use the bathroom and I heard what sounded like gunshots,” Derby said.
She wasn’t alone. Around 3 a.m. Sunday police say they received multiple calls to 911 with reports of shots fired in the River Street neighborhood in Saxtons River. “My daughter sleeps right near a window, so it is definitely really nerve-wracking,” Derby said.
Vermont State Police evacuated nearby homes and shut down a portion of the neighborhood as a precaution. “I was really nervous and kind of scared actually because you don’t normally see that around here,” Derby said.
Authorities say 53-year Anthony Smith was the man pulling the trigger. Crisis negotiators were called to the scene, and police surrounded his home. Smith surrendered without any problems.
It all came as surprise for Derby who says her neighbor is usually pretty friendly. “He is usually out walking around and talking with everybody and a really nice guy, so I was really taken aback by it,” she said.
Investigators say there was evidence that multiple rounds had been fired inside Smith’s home as well. Right now they don’t know the motive. -- but some good news -- no one was hurt.
Smith is being held at the Southern State Correctional Center and faces multiple charges including reckless endangerment, felony unlawful mischief, and use of a weapon while committing a crime. He is due in court Monday.
