Retired judge Vacek takes early lead in GOP primary for Fort Bend DA, early returns show
Retired Fort Bend County Judge Cliff Vacek had a comfortable lead over Sugar Land attorney and ex-county prosecutor Shawn McDonald in the GOP primary for district attorney, according to early voting-returns.
Vacek and McDonald are seeking to succeed District Attorney John Healey, who is retiring after a quarter-century in office. The victor will face Democratic candidate Brian Middleton in the November election.
Vacek, 71, a native of Fort Bend County, served as a judge in the 400th District before starting his own law practice and serving as managing partner of another. He was endorsed by the outgoing Healey and two local mayors.
McDonald touted his endorsement by Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls and other law-enforcement officials, prompting Vacek to suggest that his opponent could feel beholden to those groups. McDonald rejected the charge.
