Rexburg man hurt intervening in domestic dispute
REXBURG — A Rexburg man was arrested last week after he reportedly punched another man trying to stop a domestic dispute.
Jared Lee Mickelsen, 32, had an argument with a woman April 8 and followed her home with his car. The woman told a Rexburg Police Department officer Mickelsen was driving erratically.
The woman told police she contacted a neighbor for help after she became afraid of what Mickelsen might do. The neighbor came to her driveway and said he saw Mickelsen attempting to take the woman’s keys and pull her from the vehicle. The neighbor was trying to pull Mickelsen away when Mickelsen struck him twice in the face.
Police arrived and observed that the victim had a cut above his left eye. The victim was later taken to a hospital, where it was discovered he had broken bones in his face and jaw.
Mickelsen admitted punching the man, saying he was acting in self defense.
Mickelsen was charged with aggravated battery, punishable with up to 15 years in prison, restitution and up to $50,000 in fines. His bond was set at $35,000.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. April 18 at Madison County Courthouse.
