San Diego will rescind parking tickets to Marine mourners
SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego’s mayor is promising to rescind dozens of parking citations issued to people who gathered to honor a Marine killed in a helicopter crash.
The San Diego Union-Tribune says 35 tickets were issued Tuesday morning to people who lined the funeral route of Gunnery Sgt. Derik Holley. He was one of four Marines killed in an April 3 helicopter crash near El Centro.
The city says nobody notified authorities of the procession from Miramar National Cemetery or the city would have found a way to accommodate it.
After a backlash erupted on social media, Mayor Kevin Faulconer tweeted Tuesday afternoon that the tickets will be rescinded. Two vehicle owners who already paid $65 fines online are expected to receive refunds.
