William Joseph Elder

Billy Joe passed away at his home on Oct. 23, 2018. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

William Joseph Elder was born on March 31, 1938, in Chicago, to William Francis and Rosemary Elder. After graduating from Keokuk High School in Iowa, Billy Joe enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving our nation in the Korean and Vietnam wars. Along with being a missile commander, BJ was commissioned to drive Formula race cars for General Curtis LeMay. He was also hired out for projects applying his amazing artistic talents.

After the Vietnam War, BJ eventually settled in southern Arizona, doing what he enjoyed most: construction, engineering, gardening, drawing, playing practical jokes, playing guitar, singing, telling story after story to anyone, and enjoying summer visits and Sunday evening phone calls from his son, William Tracy (Jane) Dodson from Columbus, and his grandchildren, Kiley and Marcus Dodson.

Survivors include children: William Tracy Dodson, Theresa Creach, William Thomas Elder and LeeAnn Newton; siblings, Judi Walker, Joyce Williams, Joan Horst, Mike Elder, Pam Grimsley and Jill (Penny) Blakely; many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, William F. (Bill) and Rosemary Elder; brother, Robert Elder.
