San Antonio area student wins statewide speech contest

An East Central High School student who won the Texas 4H public speaking roundup will move on to the national round in January.

Kaitlyn Kempen, 17 and a senior, won for her speech, “What’s the McDeal?” in which she used the agricultural sustainability initiative of the fast food chain McDonald’s to discuss the role of businesses in addressing issues like sustainability and hunger.

McDonald’s offers incentives to its suppliers for things like “good water management, good eco-friendly husbandry for animals and crop protections,” said Lorie Kempen, Kaitlyns’ mother and an ECHS agriculture science teacher.

The same speech is competing in a similar statewide contest run by the National FFA Organization. It also earned Kaitlyn Kempen a $1,000 scholarship from the Texas Sons of the American Revolution.
