East 77, North 63
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) _ Tonya Cardoza scored 13 points and Kelly Lyons and Terri Bradley added 11 points each as the East took the bronze medal in women’s basketball with a 77-63 victory over the North at the U.S. Olympic Festival Wednesday.
For the festival, the East split its four games, while the North was 1-3. The South and West went for the gold medal Wednesday night.
The North went more than four minutes without a field goal in the first half, then missed its first 10 field goal attempts in the second half. Applying full-court pressure defense midway through the second half, the North managed to cut the gap to 71-61 on Latonia Foster’s basket with 1:38 left.
But the East padded its winning margin with six straight points, three each from Cardoza, of Virginia, and Dawn Bryant. Bryant, who also plays for Virginia, had 12 rebounds for the East.
Sheryl Porter, who plays for Loyola (Ill.), led the North with 12 points and Dena Head of Canton, Mich., added 10.
