One person dies after walking in front of FrontRunner near Orem station
Officials reported one adult male was hit and killed by a FrontRunner train near the intermodal station in Orem on Wednesday morning.
The incident happened on the northbound tracks at 1350 W. 900 South about 8:25 a.m., according to a tweet from the Utah Transit Authority.
The man was walking through the designated crossing area to try and reach the platform when he was hit, according to Lt. Mike Thiede with UTA Police. The man died at the scene.
Thiede said the oncoming northbound train was traveling slowly and tried to brake before the crash.
Officials are investigating whether the man was distracted or not paying attention. A witness said the train horn was blaring right before the incident.
Thiede urged commuters to remove headphones and pay attention to what is happening around them at stations.
“Just be very, very careful anytime you are around trains,” he said.
A tweet from UTA states that a 30-minute northbound delay is expected.
