NEW PRAGUE — Ray Motley hadn’t reached the end zone yet this high school football season so the Rochester Mayo running back made up for lost games Friday night.

Motley rushed for four touchdowns and led Mayo to a 41-27 win over New Prague in a Big Southeast Red Subdistrict football game. Mayo improved to 4-0 for a second straight year. New Prague (0-4) lost its 15th straight.

Motley, a 5-foot-11 and 160-pound senior back, was the workhorse in Mayo’s offense with 21 carries for a career-high 162 yards. He scored on runs of 5, 61, 2 and 3 yards. He entered the game with just five carries for 16 yards and no scores.

“Ray has been itching to run the ball and he just did a great job of stepping up,” said Mayo head coach Donny Holcomb. “He had some good runs that he bounced outside for big gains, and he also got the tough yards between the tackles.”

Mayo flew to a 21-0 lead in the first half, but New Prague trimmed it to 21-15 by halftime. The Trojans tied it early in the third quarter.

Mayo regained the lead in the third quarter on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Trajan Grimsrud to tight end Jake Klinegele.

Grimsrud also connected in the first half for a 77-yard touchdown pass to Malik Franklin. Franklin finished with three catches for 93 yards, and Grimsrud was 9-of-14 for 162 passing.

“I think our offensive line responded well,” Holcomb said. “I was happy with how they played and the pass protection they gave Trajan.”

New Prague had 300 yards in offense with 197 on the ground. Quarterback Nathan Berg was efficient completing 6-of-9 for 103 and three touchdowns.

Mayo will put its unbeaten record on the line next week at home against Mankato West (4-0), which is ranked No. 2 in Class AAAAA.

“Everybody knows it’s going to be a huge challenge,” Holcomb said. “We will see how we respond to it.”
