HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL Darien’s defense dominates Warde

October 20, 2018 GMT

FAIRFIELD — For a moment, for a brief moment, Fairfield Warde had a chance to change the momentum of what had been a one-sided affair in favor of Darien and make the Blue Wave sweat a little.

Will Stearns has just caught a touchdown pass to get the Mustangs on the board and one play after the ensuing kickoff, Joe Gjinaj recovered a fumble at the Darien 31, giving Warde the football and the chance to cut the Blue Wave lead in half.

But Darien doesn’t have the best defense in the state for nothing. John Henry Slonieski intercepted quarterback Joey Gublin — one of four Warde turnovers — as the No. 1 ranked Blue Wave used four touchdown passes from Cooper Hancock to roll past the Mustangs 42-7 Friday night at Tetreau-Davis Field.

“Coming into the game we knew we could throw on these guys,” Hancock said, who unofficially was 23 of 37 for 337 yards. “With all the receivers and the talent they have, we knew we were going to be able to succeed with that.”

“It was a matter of what they were giving us,” Darien coach Rob Trifone said. “They play hard in the box, so we were having a little bit of a hard time running the football, so we told Coop to just start throwing the thing and he did a nice job.”

And while Hancock and the Darien offense were on cruise control from the get-go, the Blue Wave defense was the story of the night. They held Warde to negative-17 yards rushing and just 43 total yards. The Mustangs managed just two first downs, none in the first half.

“Not being able to get something off that other turnover, that really hurt us,” Warde coach Duncan DellaVolpe said. “They were just a little bit quicker and stronger than us and we made too many early mistakes to come back. But we didn’t quit at all and I’m very proud of the kids for that.”
