HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP Staples boys, Derby girls win state titles

MANCHESTER — The Staples boys and Derby girls cross country teams won their class titles at the CIAC championships Friday at Wickham Park.

The Wreckers won the Class LL boys title with 78 points, placing three runners in the top 10: Mayo Smith (sixth, 16:18), Morgan Fierro (seventh, 16:25) and Nicholas Taubenheim (ninth, 16:28).

Cassidy Ngaopraseutsack and Sabrina Hancock finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to lead the Red Raiders’ girls team to the Class S championship.

Other regional runners to place in the top 10 were Ludlowe’s Kedar Chavan (Class LL boys, tenth, 16:30), Shelton’s Robert Dillon (LL boys, third, 16:00), Trumbull’s Alessandra Zaffina (LL girls, third, 19:02) and Weston’s Ryan Rupprecht (MM boys, ninth, 17:11) and Mie Axelsson (M girls, second, 19:37).
