Meyersdale school board approves support personnel contract
The Meyersdale Area School District’s board approved a support personnel contract during a meeting Wednesday.
The contract is for custodians, secretaries, lunch workers and other personnel and does not include teachers or administrators. It will be in effect until June 30, 2021.
Board President Ron Donaldson said the contract included a 25-cents-per-hour raise each year for those employees’ wages.
“The big thing is that we were able to hold the cost on health care,” he said. “Negotiations went well. Both sides were pleased.”
He said the district appreciates all of its support personnel.
“They keep the school running,” he said.
The district will negotiate a contract for administrators in the next few weeks, according to Donaldson.
The board is also looking into building a new storage and bathroom facility for the softball fields.
Co-head softball coach Tim Miller said that the softball teams don’t have a place to store their equipment because the shed near the field is too small and dilapidated.
He said the field also needs restrooms because all that is available now are two port-a-potties, which have fallen over and are not handicapped accessible.
“Some people go to the Food Lion to go to the bathroom,” he said. “We really need something down there.”
Miller added that it is also the first thing that visitors see when they drive past the high school to the softball field.
Donaldson said the board is considering the project and has preliminary drawings but has not looked into getting bids yet.
