Metro area’s jobless rate reaches 2.6% in April
Nearly 5,780 people in the Fort Wayne metropolitan area were jobless in April, representing an 2.6% unemployment rate, according to Indiana Department of Workforce Development figures released today.
The labor force was 219,573 in April, with 213,794 employed. Last month’s jobless rate was slightly lower than the 2.8% in April 2018 when 6,027 out of a labor force of 215,882 were unemployed, according to the state.
In March of this year, the Fort Wayne area jobless rate out of a labor force of 219,421 was 3.4%.
Officials said comparing one month to the same period the previous year is a better reflection of the labor picture because of seasonal variations including the weather and holidays.
The seasonally adjusted Indiana jobless rate in April this year was 3.6% compared to the 3.4% in the same month of 2018. Nationally, the seasonally adjusted jobless rate last month was 3.6% compared to 3.9% in April 2018.
The Indiana Employment Report for May is scheduled for release June 21, with the county-by-county data released on June 24.
