January 3, 2020 GMT

GLOBE, Ariz. (AP) — A Globe police officer fatally shot a knife-wielding man who allegedly approached the officer as he was speaking with someone in the downtown business district early Tuesday morning, the police department said.

Officer Justin Reynolds shot 28-year-old Eric M. Tellez Jr. after Tellez ignored commands to stop and drop the knife. Tellez had been holding it in a “threatening manner,” authorities said.

Tellez instead continued to approach Reynolds as the officer walked backward, getting within 5 feet (1.5 meters) of the officer, police said.

According to the statement, Tellez’ s last known address was in Phoenix. There appears to have been no known connection between him and the person who had been speaking with the officer.

The state Department of Public Safety is investigating the incident.

Reynolds has been placed on standard administrative leave.
