No Trump guilt in Mueller report, no obstruction

April 10, 2019 GMT

Stephan Lesher: If you will stop howling at the sky for a minute, I will try to explain how this whole Special Counsel business works. (“The report does not exonerate him,” April 4)

You see, Robert Mueller was appointed Special Counsel for one purpose and one purpose only — to determine if there was any criminality on the part of the Trump campaign and administration with respect to collusion with Russia to influence the 2016 presidential election, and if so, bring indictments for same. (That Mueller exceeded his charter with the indictments of Manafort, Gates, Flynn et al. is a topic for another discussion.) Since you seem to be fond of quoting people who have no particular insight into the Russia Collusion hoax (e.g., David Frum), let me quote one for you.

Immediately after the conclusion of the Mueller investigation Glenn Greenwald — yes, Glenn Greenwald, no fan of Trump — tweeted, “The Mueller investigation is complete and this is a simple fact that will never go away: not one single American was charged, indicted or convicted for conspiring with Russia to influence the 2016 election — not even a low-level volunteer. The number is zero.” And “Don’t even try to pretend the point of the Mueller investigation from the start wasn’t to obtain prosecutions of Americans guilty of conspiring with Russia to influence the outcome of the election or that Putin controlled Trump through blackmail. Nobody will believe your denials.” Could not have said it better myself.

The Special Counsel brought no criminal indictments, so ipso facto Trump was exonerated. (See, in this country you don’t get to say so-and-so is not guilty, but neither is he innocent. At least not yet, not until the Sandernistas take over.) And since there was no crime, there can have been no justice to obstruct. It’s simple algebra. If A equals B and B equals C, … . No, the Mueller Report was as complete an exoneration of Trump as if Trump had written it himself.

I know this all must be terribly upsetting to you, Mr. Lesher, but take heart. The Mueller investigation is even now being flushed down the rabbit hole. Now it’s on to Trump’s tax returns. I just know we’ll find something there.

Viva la resistance!
