Shaker Heights native Celeste Ng’s ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ headed to TV

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Shaker Heights native Celeste Ng’s “Little Fires Everywhere” is heading from the book club to the small screen.

The best-seller, set in Ng’s hometown, is being adapted into a limited series produced by and starring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. The project has sparked a bidding war among premium cable outlets and streaming services, Variety reported.

“Little Fires Everywhere,” which became a book club favorite after it was published in 2017, is about two families and a custody battle over a Chinese-American baby that tears them and their close-knit community of Shaker Heights apart.

Ng will serve as a producer on the series. Her first novel, “Everything I Never Told You,” is also being turned into a feature film.

“Little Fires” is the latest project for Witherspoon. The “A Wrinkle in Time” actress has a lot on her plate-- starring and producing the second season of “Big Little Lies” at HBO as well as a drama about morning TV news shows with Jennifer Aniston for Apple. Washington, meanwhile, is currently wrapping up her seven-season run as Olivia Pope on ABC’s “Scandal.”

The series in still in the early stages of development, so there’s no word if Witherspoon, Washington and Co. plan to film in Shaker Heights.
