Tom Cotter: Breakout comic from ‘America’s Got Talent’ has ‘laughter guarantee’
Tom Cotter, best known as the first comedian to ever be a finalist on “America’s Got Talent,” is bringing his act to The Stress Factory in Bridgeport, where he will perform five shows, Thursday, May 23, through Saturday, May 25.
A seasoned comic who has entertained around the globe, he’s often said he doesn’t mind that he lost to The Olate Dogs on the seventh season of “AGT,” because being on that “primetime network juggernaut” made him a familiar face to a wider audience. And besides, he loves dogs and has been invited to perform at many animal fundraisers since that gig.
He’s also taken the stage everywhere from The Improv to Caroline’s on Broadway, and received a standing ovation on “America’s Got Talent: The Champions.” If you catch one of the Bridgeport shows, you can expect him to cover a wide variety of subjects. He’s been known to hit on everything from being married to fatherhood and his kids, plus some politics and what it’s like to travel for a living.
“I have a laughter guarantee,” he says. “They will definitely laugh if they come to my show, even if I have to follow them home and tickle their feet.”

He also says his kids know they are sometimes part of his act and they don’t mind, because they know it will pay for their college. “Our children will be in therapy, but that’s OK.”
People all over the world love to laugh, Cotter says, and he enjoys being the one to get them going. He admits the traveling can be rough, with lots of “twiddling your fingers at the gate, waiting for a delayed flight to board.” Still, the performing makes it all worthwhile.
