Pedestrian struck, killed by bus in downtown Washington

February 8, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) — A pedestrian trapped underneath the wheels of a commuter bus in downtown Washington has died.

News outlets report the man was struck by an OmniRide bus outside the National Museum of African American History and Culture around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Vito Maggiolo says a rescue team climbed under the bus and determined he’d suffered fatal injuries. He said the team would recover the body from under the rear wheels once police conducted an on-site investigation.

The OmniRide bus travels between Washington and Virginia’s Prince William County. Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission spokeswoman Christine Rodrigo says no one aboard the bus was injured, and the commission is cooperating with the investigation.

The incident shut down 14th Street NW between Constitution and Independence avenues for several hours.
