Wagster to receive University’s Silver EM
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Associated Press reporter Emily Wagster Pettus has been named the latest recipient of the University of Mississippi’s highest journalism award, the Silver Em.
The university announced the award in a Friday news release. A 1989 graduate of the university, Pettus has worked for the Vicksburg Evening Post and Jackson’s The Clarion-Ledger. She began covering the statehouse for The Clarion-Ledger in 1994.
Pettus joined the AP in Jackson in 2001. She still covers the Legislature, politics and a variety of other issues, including civil rights. Friday’s announcement says Pettus is being honored in part for her awareness of the importance of statehouse journalism. Assistant journalism professor and past Silver Em recipient Curtis Wilkie calls Pettus “one of the best reporters around.”
The Silver Em Awards Ceremony is set for April 3.
