Now available: A San Antonio craft soda that’s puro South Side

March 7, 2019

With more than a year of careful planning, development and production under their belts, Andrew Anguiano and Gregg Spickler are ready to pop a fizzy cap or two. The co-founders of Southside Craft Soda have scheduled a launch party for their fledgling brand at B&B Smokehouse Saturday, March 9.

Southside Craft Soda will offer tastings of its first product, TexaCola, at the event. The soda is made with Mexican cane sugar; a citrus blend of lemons, oranges and limes from the Rio Grande Valley; and a touch of honey from San Antonio. TexaCola is currently available at a limited number of San Antonio-area bars and restaurants and can be purchased in four-packs at Smoke Shack Meat Market for $6.

Southside Craft Soda was founded with the intent of creating a beverage with a distinctively San Antonio taste and appeal, Anguiano said. Future Southside flavors will include a cream soda flavored with vanilla, honey, cinnamon and clove; a root beer made with mesquite beans; a lemon-lime soda and others.

In addition to providing South Texas with tasty beverages it can call its own, Angiano sees the brand as an important contributor to a part of the city that’s grown at a slower pace than some. Southside is currently bottled at Alamo Beer Co., but Anguiano said the brand ultimately will move to a production facility in an area near San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.

“The longterm goal for us is to create jobs in the Mission San Jose neighborhood,” Anguiano said. “This is my neighborhood, and it’s important for us to get this right.”
