Coast Guard continues search for sailboat off Maine coast
BAR HARBOR, Maine (AP) — A Coast Guard airplane is continuing to search for three sailors reported missing off Maine’s Mount Desert Island.
Petty Officer Nicole Groll, a Coast Guard spokeswoman, said the weekend search was launched after a 911 call early Saturday from boaters in distress. The Coast Guard determined that the call came from a location 20 miles south of Mount Desert Island.
The missing sailboat is a 40-footer named the Dove.
Boats from the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guard, along with aircraft, searched all day Saturday in relatively calm seas and under sunny skies. The search continued Sunday with the airplane.
Weather conditions remained favorable Sunday but were expected to deteriorate. The National Weather Service posted a gale warning for late Sunday with projected gusts up to 45 mph.
