Giuliani,Trump on collusion criminality: Darcy cartoon

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- At a 2016 campaign rally in Iowa, then candidate Donald Trump claimed he “could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody” and he “wouldn’t lose voters.”   And former New York Mayor turned Trump attorney,  Rudy Giuliani would say it wasn’t a crime, that Trump was standing his ground, and the victim walked in front of the bullet.

Michael Cohen was Trump’s “fixer” who is now reportedly fixing to tell Robert Mueller that Trump had prior knowledge of the Trump Tower meeting with Russians.   In response,  Giuliani’s  showing he’s Trump’s flip flopper and synonym spinner.

Giuliani, who had once defended Cohen as a loyal and honorable, denounced Cohen as an habitual liar with no credibility.

Next Giuliani claimed that collusion was not even a crime.  Soon President Trump was echoing Giuliani’s talking points on twitter and other public statements.

It’s true, there is no criminal statute for collusion.  It’s also true their are criminal statutes for conspiracy, obstruction and perjury, all three of which, Robert Mueller is investigating the Trump presidential campaign and administration for.

Mueller’s ongoing probe has already led to multiple charges, indictments and guilty pleas, involving members of the Trump campaign and administration, along with Russians involved in interfering in the 2016 election.

Giuliani and Trump’s “collusion isn’t a crime” defense comes off like a concession that Trump indeed had prior knowledge of the Don Jr.-Russia meeting in Trump Tower.  If Cohen and others testify to that, it appears Giuliani and Trump’s response will be “So what.”

Conspiracy can be criminal, which is what collusion is.  It’s also illegal to accept campaign aid from a foreign entity.   Don Jr., Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort went into the Trump Tower meeting with Russians expecting to get dirt on Hillary Clinton.   They knew it was improper, that’s why they tried to brush off the meeting as being about Russian adoptions.   The president knew it was improper, that’s why he allegedly dictated Don Jr’s statement claiming the meeting was just about adoptions.

After Trump’s treasonous performance in Helsinki, some began to seriously wonder if he was a Russian Manchurian candidate.   Giuliani’s defenses of Trump make me wonder if he’s a Mueller Manchurian attorney.

Giuliani’s been doing a better job of making Trump look guilty than look innocent.  While arguing that collusion wasn’t a crime, seeming to concede Trump knew of the Russian meeting, Giuliani actually volunteered that there had been a previously undisclosed meeting about the Russian Trump Tower meeting to provide Clinton dirt.   Not only did Giuliani divulge a second meeting, he placed Don Jr., Kushner and Manafort, among others, in it.

Giuliani went out and moved the proverbial goal post...even closer to Trump in The Oval Office.

Trump’s feeling the heat, and this time it really isn’t from Global Warming.

It’s telling that Giuliani’s press campaign on collusion was preceded by a flurry of Trump tweets over the weekend, and Monday morning, attacking Mueller, Cohen and the press.

Can you imagine how the president will react if Don Jr. and/or Kushner are indicted for perjury over the Trump Tower Russia meeting and attempted coverup?

Meanwhile, former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort is now on trial, hoping to avoid having to trade his $15,000 ostrich jacket for a zebra striped or orangutan orange prison jumpsuit.
