Bill would require transition to electronic court documents

February 5, 2019

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Some House lawmakers want to require the state’s courts to complete their transition to an electronic filing system.

The House Judiciary A Committee on Tuesday approved House Bill 1149 , sending it to the full House for more work.

The measure, sponsored by Republican Rep. Trey Lamar of Senatobia, would require all chancery, circuit and county courts to begin using the Mississippi Electronic Court system by July 1, 2021.

Today, a majority of chancery courts are using the system, which has been rolled out slowly over a number of years. However, circuit courts in only a minority of the state’s counties are online, and only a few post criminal cases.

Some counties use other electronic systems besides the one offered by the state.
