Donald Trump Jr. was subpoenaed by the Senate Intelligence committee because he declined two scheduled interviews about the Russia investigation, the Associated Press is reporting.

Committee chairman Sen. Richard Burr said during a Thursday GOP luncheon that the president’s eldest son agreed to be interviewed but backed out before, according to three anonymous sources who spoke with the AP for theirstoryon the development.

Mr. Burr, North Carolina Republican, said he and Mr. Trump had negotiated since December to ask further questions about Mr. Trump’s previous 2017 testimony regarding the Russia investigation before he backed out of March and April meetings, according to a source knowledgable about the remarks.

The senator has faced controversy for subpoenaing Mr. Trumpfrom his Republican colleagues, many of which have said the Mueller investigation is “case closed” and Congress should move on to “issues that matter.”

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham went so far as to suggest Mr. Trump could ignore the subpoena, saying that’s the advice he would give were he Mr. Trump’s attorney.

“I would tell him, ‘You don’t need to go back into this environment anymore,’” the South Carolina Republican said Sunday on the Fox News Channel.
