Mary Taylor: ‘Of course I’ll vote for the Republican ticket’ Ohio Matters: Episode 5

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Republican Mary Taylor says she would vote for rival Mike DeWine over a Democrat for governor.

It’s a big concession that Taylor now says she would vote for DeWine in the general election in November if she loses the May primary. She previously said she would not support DeWine, the current attorney general, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

“Of course, I’ll vote for the Republican ticket. Mike DeWine in this case is less liberal than Dennis Kucinich and as a Republican, that’s important to me,” Taylor said on this week’s Ohio Matters podcast.

But she doesn’t think it’s going to come down to that. The lieutenant governor believes she’s going to win the Republican primary in May.

Ohio Matters is the weekly politics podcast from cleveland.com. Every Friday, Andrew Tobias, Mary Kilpatrick and Seth Richardson sit down with political figures from around the state for indepth interviews and discussions.

The Republican gubernatorial primary race is admittedly an uphill battle for Taylor. She has less money than DeWine and lacks the endorsement of the Ohio GOP.

She’s shunned the support of Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who brought her on as his running mate in 2010 and has endorsed her in this race.

Still, Taylor isn’t expecting a loss on the night of the primary.

“I plan to win on May 8 and fully expect to be voting for myself,” Taylor said.
